DALI

Lighting control with DALI – the “Digital Addressable Lighting Interface” (DALI) is a communication protocol for building lighting applications and is used for communication between lighting control devices, such as electronic ballasts, brightness sensors or motion detectors.

DALI system features:

  • Easy reconfiguration when changing room usage
  • Digital data transmission via 2-wire line
  • Up to 64 single units, 16 groups and 16 scenes per DALI line
  • Status confirmation of individual lights
  • Storage of configuration data (e.g., group assignments, light scene values, fading times, emergency lighting/system failure level, power on level) in the electronic control gear (ECG)

  • Bus topologies: line, tree, star (or any combination)
  • Cable lengths up to 300 meters (depending on cable cross section)

DALI Explained Simply

The manufacturer-independent protocol is defined in the IEC 62386 standard and ensures interoperability of control devices in digitally controllable lighting systems, such as transformers and power dimmers. This standard replaces the often-used analog 1 to 10 V dimmer interface.

Building Lighting Control: DALI Applications

The DALI protocol is used in building automation to control individual lights and lighting groups. Assessment of individual lights to operating elements and grouping of lights are performed via short addresses. A DALI master can control a line with up to 64 devices. Each device can be assigned to 16 individual groups and 16 individual scenes. With bidirectional data exchange, not only are switching and dimming possible, but status messages can also be returned to the controller by the operating unit.

DALI maximizes flexibility by easily adjusting lighting control (via software without hardware modifications) to new conditions (e.g., changes in room layout and usage). Lighting can also be assigned or grouped after installation (e.g., changes in room usage) easily and without rewiring. In addition, advanced DALI controllers can be integrated into higher-level control systems and incorporated into complete building automation systems via bus systems such as KNX, BACnet or MODBUS®.

Advantages of our DALI products:

  • Quick and easy installation of DALI lights via WINSTA® Pluggable Connection System

  • Freely programmable applications offer high degree of project flexibility

  • Ability to connect digital/analog sensors and actuators, as well as subsystems (e.g. DALI, EnOcean)

  • DALI EN 62386 standard compliance

  • “Easy mode” for lighting function control without complicated programming

DALI Products from WAGO

DALI Multi-Master Module
(753-647)

The 12 mm-wide DALI Multi-Master Module (753-647) confirms to DALI standard IEC 62386 and, in addition to 64 DALI actuators (ECG), supports up to 16 multi-sensors (max. 64 sensor addresses). This eliminates the need for installing sensor-only parallel buses (brightness measurement and/or motion detection). This saves time and money. Commissioning and management of the DALI networks has also been markedly simplified. Installation time is reduced, and the network structure is rendered clearer – the bottom line is that the use of DALI is now more profitable than before.

Each DALI ECG can be assigned to 16 groups and 16 scenes. The DALI Multi-Master Module also offers 16 additional virtual groups on the DALI bus.

Advantages:

  • Complies with DALI EN 62386 standard
  • Up to 64 DALI addresses (for ECGs and sensors)
  • Freely programmable for complex applications
  • Interfaces between DALI and KNX, BACnet, Modbus and others (in combination with the respective WAGO Controllers)

DALI Power Supply
(753-620)

WAGO also offers two options for supplying the DALI modules, so each customer can choose the most cost-effective solution. A 12 mm-wide module (753-620 DALI Multi-Master DC/DC Converter) provides 200 mA power to each DALI module. If several DALI modules are to be operated with one control system, an external 230 V DIN-35 rail-mount power supply unit can provide an output current of 1100 mA (787-1007 Power Supply for DALI 753-647 Multi-Master Modules).

Advantage:

  • Cost-effective power supply for parallel operation of multiple DALI Multi-Master Modules

DALI Sensors (2851-8xxx)

WAGO has added multi-sensors for the 753-647 Multi-Master Module to its DALI product range for detecting movement and brightness. The sensors come in two versions: either as a multi-sensor kit, consisting of ceiling sensors, sensor coupler (which serves as the interface to the DALI network) and an installation set, or with a directly integrated link to the DALI bus for mounting, as well as for installation on ceilings and in recessed boxes.

The new presence and brightness sensors enable WAGO to offer one-stop shopping for its automation levels in the field of universal DALI lighting solutions. The user can therefore be certain that the components used will be completely compatible with each other. Added to this is the user-friendly configuration of the entire DALI network, which WAGO provides with the DALI Configurator's graphical user interface.

Advantages:

  • Consistent solution from a single source
  • Various DALI multi-sensors for different installation environments
  • Compatibility with DALI Multi-Master Module

DALI Configurator

The free DALI Configurator is a graphical configuration interface for configuration and commissioning of the 753-647 DALI Multi-Master Module and the DALI network. The configurator is available as a stand-alone Windows application or for use with WAGO-I/O-CHECK software.

It provides the following functions: easy commissioning, configuration, service, support and maintenance of a DALI network.

The software’s most prominent features are a simplified project overview, optimized device addressing, efficient batch processing and comprehensive functions for data backup and restoring.

Advantages:

  • Simple and easy commissioning/configuration of a DALI line
  • Efficient batch processing of a large number of DALI devices by multiple selection
  • Comprehensive data and parameter backup and restoration of a complete DALI line
