Telecontrol Connection for Customer Substations

Whether power generation plants, storage systems or load customers: When it comes to the medium-voltage connection, customer substations need to be linked through telecontrol technology. Even though the TCRs (technical connection rules) vary from one grid operator to another, in about three-quarters of German medium-voltage grid territories, WAGO’s Customer Substation software application lets you establish the connection in just ten minutes because the application offers standardized, pre-configured software for various grid territories.

In addition, WAGO can offer solutions for your company’s specific level of programming expertise and staffing according to your specific needs, whether for system integration, switchgear manufacturing or station building.

Advantages:

  • Industry-proven telecontrol technology hardware; hardened per BDEW white paper
  • Easy software parameterization with no programming per VDE-AR-N 4110
  • Complete solution of hard- and software in a finished control cabinet

Manufacturer Declaration and Type Testing per FGW-TR3:
WAGO Has the Solution

New Requirements for Certification of Power Plants

Since October 1, 2024, power plant operators must provide a manufacturer's declaration as proof when operating the first unit in parallel with the grid or when updating a system certificate. Starting March 1, 2025, an accredited type test per FGW-TR3 will also be required to meet legal requirements. WAGO, through early certification in compliance with the VDE-AR-N 4110 specifications, is already well prepared and fully meets these requirements. Certificate FGH-K-2023-002 confirms WAGO's prioritization of performance requirements, ensuring a seamless transition.

WAGO Application Customer Substation – New Features

Primary and Secondary Stations

The master/slave concept (primary/substation) of the KÜS enables projects with two or more separate controllers. The primary station is the central controller, acting as a gateway to the network operator. It collects system data and provides it via an IEC-60870-5-104 interface. The substations record system data and forward it through the internal bus system to the primary station, which assumes control. The system is VDE-ARN-4110 certified and supports the connection of PV systems, direct marketers and grid operators. Substations are primarily used for recording digital signals.

Cascaded Power Plant Controller

A cascaded power plant system at the customer substation enables flexible control by a central power plant entity. This central entity accepts setpoints from the network operator and direct marketer, forwarding them to lower-level entities. The system can operate on one or more KÜS controllers and supports applications such as prioritizing PV systems, integrating various types of data loggers and providing separate producer data to network operators or direct marketers. Only the central entity assumes control in the closed-loop method, while the lower-level instances pass on the setpoints.

Signal Conditioner

The current version of the application supports connections to numerous signal conditioners, data loggers and inverters. If needed, the inverter can act as a measurement source, and control data – such as active and reactive power and voltage from different sources – can be combined. A 3-phase power measurement module, compliant with VDE-AR-N 4110 standards, controls PV systems.

Standards-Compliant Medium-Voltage Connection – According to Your Specific Requirements

To guarantee grid stability, distribution grid operators require the possibility of monitoring and switching customers’ systems. This involves significant programming effort for the corresponding interfaces in the grid connection point (GCP).

Explore the various options for quick and easy remote connection of customer substations and find the one that matches the specific level of expertise or staffing in your own company.

WAGOAppRTU_Slaves – for System Integrators

Does your company have extensive programming expertise? For system integrators using WAGO telecontrol technology, ready-made communication libraries are available as simple modules for the IEC 60870-compliant connection of customer systems with the WAGOAppRTU_Slaves library. The WAGOAppRTU_Slaves library is available for free download and supports a variety of grid territories.

The WAGO Application Customer Substation – For Control Cabinet Manufacturers

Parameterization, Not Programming: The WAGO Customer Substation application is ideal for switchgear manufacturers (available as a DRM license: Item No. 2759-2018/0260-1000). As a ready-made software solution, it reduces programming effort and accelerates the commissioning of customer substations. With this application, you can establish a grid-compliant medium-voltage telecontrol connection in just ten minutes. Additionally, a direct marketer interface is already integrated into the combination of the WAGO telecontrol device* and the application, eliminating the need for additional hardware. This not only saves cabinet space but also reduces costs.

Ready-Made Control Cabinets – a Plug-and-Play Solution for Station Manufacturers

As a producer of high-quality telecontrol technology, WAGO offers optional TCR-compliant pre-wired, pre-programmed control cabinets. This combination of hardware and software provides a cost-effective, ready-to-use solution from a single source, tested in actual operating conditions. Preconfigured control cabinets, including software (e.g., Item No. 8007-0100/1000-0247), combinations with protective devices (Item No. 8007-0100/1000-0270), and other variants with additional protective functions, are available upon request.

RTU for Telecontrol Technology

The WAGO RTU solutions use the modular WAGO I/O System, which has a long-standing record of success, as the platform. Special telecontrol protocols (IEC 61850, IEC 60870, DNP3, Modbus®) were added to the scalable-performance controllers. In combination with the option of IEC-61131-3 programming, this allows all tasks – both telecontrol communication tasks and station automation tasks – to be handled flexibly and, above all, easily.

Power plant controllers help power plants achieve grid-compatible feed-in management at the grid connection point (GCP).

WAGO Power Plant Control allows plant operators and system integrators to meet the requirements for these controllers that are set on the grid side – flexibly and reliably. The solution is certified per VDE-AR-N 4110 and 4120.

The world’s fossil fuel supply is finite, and global warming is already well underway. Failure is not an option for the energy transition. Telecontrol technology will play a special role in the implementation, since the electricity, gas, water and heat infrastructures in particular involve spread-out service areas and remote stations.
