Connection Technology for Hazardous Areas

The 221 Series Compact Splicing Connector for hazardous areas offers entirely new design possibilities, particularly for the manufacturers of distribution boxes, terminal boxes, lights or electronic devices.

The light gray “Ex protection” version also retains all the advantages of the 221 Series. As an all-purpose terminal block of ignition protection type Ex e (“Increased Safety”) it can be used for all applications in zones 1 and 2.

At a Glance:

  • Easy to use: Pull the lever up, insert a conductor and push the lever back down
  • Available as 2-, 3- and 5-wire connectors
  • Working voltages of 275 V or 440 V
  • ATEX (Ex 2 II G), / IECEx (Ex eb IIC Gb) Zones 1,2
  • IECEX (Ex eb IIC Gb), American Ex (AEx eb IICGb) / Class 1, Zone 1
  • Appropriate for “Ex e” and “Ex i” areas

Benefits of the 221 Series in Ex Areas

The ease of handling of the 221 Series is also reproduced in the version for hazardous areas: Pull the lever up, insert a conductor, release the lever.

The 221 Series connectors can be used in a wide range of applications, not only because they are available as 2-, 3- or 5-conductor terminal blocks, but also because of the different versions: The 4 mm2 version of the 221 Series allows you to use fine-stranded conductors from 0.2 to 4 mm2, while the mm2 version connects all conductor types from 0.5 to 6 mm2 (20–10 AWG).

Using a Carrier

For use with a mounting carrier, the following rule applies depending on the required working voltage: If the terminal blocks are placed directly next to each other in the carrier, the working voltage is 275 V. However, if the terminal blocks are inserted in such a way that a spacer is visible between each pair, the working voltage can be up to 440 V. This ensure compliance with the creepage distances and clearances required by the standard.

The 2-, 3- and 5-conductor terminal blocks can be inserted into the matching mounting carrier. The carrier can either be clamped onto a mounting rail or screwed tightly to any smooth surface. A decisive advantage for applications in hazardous areas: Even once the terminal block has been inserted into the carrier, conductors can still be connected and disconnected, e.g., if only individual conductors have to be rewired.

International Certificates

Would you like to use the 221 Series for hazardous areas internationally? With the certificates for ATEX (Ex 2 II G), IECEX (Ex eb IIC Gb) and American Ex (AEx eb IICGb), you can use the 221 Series flexibly.
