Efficient Automation in Control Cabinet Manufacturing

The future potential of control cabinet manufacturing, which is currently associated with time-consuming manual assembly, will no longer be solely in the hands of humans but also those of robots. This is true not only for conventional industrial robots for mass production, such as 4-, 5- or 6-axis robots, but also for “cobots” (collaborative robots). After a successfully completed risk assessment, these specialized robots can work safely next to humans without robotic protective equipment.

Challenges during Manual Assembly in Production

Workshop-oriented production, especially DIN-rail assembly, currently poses many challenges, such as:

  • Highly manual and time-consuming assembly
  • High production costs due to the variety of different cabinets
  • High physical loads on employees during assembly and wiring

These obstacles can be overcome by using robots and cobots.

WAGO Cabinet Assembly Robot Demonstrator

At WAGO, we deal intensively with the current requirements of control cabinet manufacturers and already offer specific solutions with WAGO Cabinet Offerings. Automation in control cabinet manufacturing is an essential topic for the future, especially given the skills shortage and the advancement of digitalization.

Based on these developments, we see potential for developing and implementing flexible assembly automation systems in control cabinet manufacturing. With the WAGO Cabinet Assembly Robot (WCAR), we are developing a concrete vision for the future of automated assembly of control cabinet components, which flexibly and collaboratively assembles manufacturer-independent terminal blocks in the pilot application “building small distribution boards.”

The New Cooperation between Humans and Robots/Cobots

Robots and cobots are not substitutions for humans but rather a support. The advantages these solutions offer include:

  • Helping people expand their capabilities.
  • Freeing up human resources for other, more demanding tasks by performing repetitive or physically demanding tasks.

Read here how robots and cobots can reduce people’s workloads and counteract the skills shortage.
