Optimal Lighting in the Greenhouse Using Lighting Connection Technology from WAGO

Light is vital for plants – they need it for photosynthesis and to grow. Without this essential environmental factor, plants suffer or even die. Light also has an impact on the blossoming of plants. It is therefore an important source of energy. SANlight EVO series LED luminaires provide the best possible lighting for professional horticulture use. To keep their LED luminaires working reliably, SANlight relies on lighting technology from WAGO for wiring.
Since it was established in 2012, Austrian company SANlight has been dedicated to developing innovative plant lighting. Several fully automatic phytotrons, an open plant cultivation lab and the company’s own light and electronics lab make this possible. “As the market leader, we feel it’s our duty to offer the best products and keep developing them further. Besides optimal efficiency, durability and reliability are also at the forefront”, says Martin Anker, CEO and founder of SANlight, explaining his company’s guiding philosophy.

The Right Light for Optimal Plant Growth at All Times

The EVO series is a highly efficient LED plant lighting system for indoor cultivation areas and for use in greenhouses. The series’ slim, modular design provide high power density in a variety of applications. The EVO series is used primarily in the cultivation of cannabis plants, in large nurseries and for growing orchids, water lilies and coral. The LED luminaires provide a homogeneous distribution of light over the entire cultivation area with a broadband color spectrum. This yields a light spectrum that extends far beyond the conventional PAR (parabolic aluminized reflector) range and also provides a far-red-to-red ratio that has a positive effect on photomorphogenesis, and thus on harvest quality and quantity.

Save Energy with the Right Lighting Technology

According to SANlight, in the development of the EVO series, the protective and light-directing secondary optics were optimized to the geometric dimensions of the luminaire. This yielded homogeneous illumination with optimal light intensity (PPFD). The asymmetric secondary optics also minimize losses during photon transport to the plants while protecting the LEDs from the environmental influences to which the luminaire is exposed during plant cultivation. Sulfur and other chemical substances cannot penetrate to the LED, which, according to SANlight, prevents oxidation of the LED chip reflector. “We always use robust luminaires with long life expectancies – which our customers also value. We only use high-quality materials and components – and that, of course, includes WAGO’s”, explains Martin Anker.

The lever of the 221 Series was the deciding factor for us. It makes wiring fast and easy, which is why we chose this terminal block.

High Dielectric Strength with WAGO’s 2075 Series

SANlight and WAGO have partnered for several years now. The latest product, the EVO series, uses 2075 Series SMD PCB Terminal Blocks and one 221 Series Splicing Connector. “We chose the 2075 Series because of its high dielectric strength,” explains Martin Anker. The terminal block is designed for a rated voltage of 600 V according to UL 1977 and for a rated current up to 9 A. The 2075 Series is mounted on the PCB of the LED module. It is connected to the PCB by a multi-pin plug developed by SANlight. Using this plug, the user pushes a contact pin up from below through a hole in the PCB to insert it into the SMD PCB terminal block.

The fact that the conductor is connected to the bottom of the LED module provides for a more even light distribution, which is important for ensuring uniform plant growth. The extremely compact size of the terminal block, a mere 3.9 mm thick, is also an advantage, as it minimizes shadowing. The SMD PCB terminal block is suitable for solid conductors with a cross-section of 0.34 to 0.75 mm². The PUSH WIRE® connection allows the conductor to be pushed in and connected directly, saving manual wiring time, as in the case of SANlight.

Tool-Free Wiring with the WAGO Lever

SANlight chose the COMPACT 221 Series Splicing Connector for connecting the LED driver to the LED module. “The lever of the 221 Series was the deciding factor for us. It makes wiring fast and easy, which is why we chose this terminal block”, says Anker. The two-pole version with a conductor cross-section of 0.2 to 4 mm² is used. The splicing connector is very easy to open with the connector’s lever mechanism. The conductor can then be routed into the clamping unit without any tools; when the lever is lowered, the conductor is securely wired.
We only use high-quality materials and components – and that, of course, includes WAGO’s.”

The Best Chances for a Good Harvest

With its EVO series, SANlight is taking a further step toward more efficient and durable LED luminaire technology for plant cultivation. With it, it the company aims to help optimize the quality and quantity of harvests. WAGO splicing connectors, specifically the 2075 and 221 Series, help SANlight achieve this goal with reliable lighting connection technology.
